Cody Berne

Cody Berne joined the firm in 2017 as an associate in the litigation group. His practice focuses on securities and business litigation.

Before joining Stoll Berne, Cody was a deputy district attorney with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office where he tried over 30 trials to verdict and prosecuted cases ranging from assault to DUII. Prior to that, he was an associate with the Portland office of Miller Nash Graham & Dunn LLP. During his time there, he represented clients in cases involving securities fraud and a wide range of business disputes.

In 2016, Cody received the Multnomah Bar Association’s Haglund Award for his commitment to pro bono activities.

During law school, Cody interned for both U.S. District Court Judge Kimberly Mueller and U.S. Magistrate Judge Carolyn Delany in Sacramento, California. Elected to the Order of the Coif, he received the Clinical Legal Education Association Award and a Witkin Award. Cody also represented clients in the Civil Rights Clinic and Prison Law Clinic and received a Public Service Certificate.

Cody began his career as a police officer with the Portland Police Bureau and also worked as a wildland firefighter during and after college.

  • Represented investors who lost millions in a fraud conceived by an Oregon-based hedge fund.
  • Defended publicly traded corporation in a federal class action, shareholder derivative suit, and SEC investigation involving allegations of securities fraud and insider trading.


  • Represented community college in an employment and disability discrimination claim brought by a former instructor.

Trade Secrets:

  • Represented title company in trade secrets dispute with a competitor that involved allegations of theft of confidential records.
  • Represented manufacturer that was repeatedly served with third-party subpoenas sent by competitors seeking critical product design information.

Public Service and Pro Bono:

  • Represented the State of Oregon in criminal prosecutions for offenses ranging from DUII to domestic violence assault.
  • Advocated on behalf of domestic violence survivors seeking to obtain Family Abuse Preventaion Act ("FAPA") restraining orders.
